At first, Twitter looks like a foreign language that you need to translate, but its really simple. Just a few things to know...
@ means you are replying to someone, or referencing them. You can click on the link to that person and see what the conversation is about, if you’re interested.
Hint: On the right hand side of your twitter home page, you can click a button to see any references people have tweeted about you using @.
RT stands for “re-tweet” and means that you like what someone said and are repeating it. You give the author the credit by using their Twitter name. Use @ so they know you did it.
Hint: If you think people might want to RT you, try to keep your original to under 120 characters, because the person re-tweeting will need the extra space it for your name.
# is used to search in Twitter. A group of letters after the # sign is called a hashtag. By putting a hashtag in a tweet, you allow people to search and find your tweets on that topic. Its catching on now at conferences to use this as a way to connect with other attendees, or hear about what happened if you can’t attend.
Hint: There is a search box where you can enter the hashtag on the right hand side of the twitter webpage, along with a list of what are the most popular current searches.
http://bit.ly/Xi3Cx These strange looking links are just a shortened version of a website that someone wants to show, but they’ve shortened the web address, probably using an app like Tweetdeck so it can fit into 140 characters.
Hint: If you see “yfrog” in the link, it’s a photo – yfrog.com is a quick and easy way to tweet your photos.
Here’s a live example, with translation:
RT@ SeatGuru@CynthiaBarnes11 I'll be at #MITXSM MITX Social Media Series Event: To Tweet or Not to Tweet tomorrow! http://bit.ly/8Ge2U
I’m repeating that Seat Guru responded to my question, and said he is attending the Mass Innovation and Technology Exchange event, “To Twitter or Not to Twitter” , for which all attendees have agreed to use the #MITXSM hashtag. Here’s a link to the webpage where you can find out more or sign up about the event.
